Edinburgh Reading Group, January 2020

Once again the reading group was polled for the title of our next read. From the four titles given as options, Reappearing Church: The Hope for Renewal in the Rise of Our Post-Christian Culture by Mark Sayers (Moody, 2019) was selected. Sayers is lead pastor of Melbourne’s Red Church in Australia.

Christian history is a series of ebbs and flows, declines and inclines—often simultaneously, in different parts of the world. In 2019 the church is thriving and revival is happening in some places (largely in the global south), thanks be to God. But what about in Western culture? How might revival happen here? That’s the question Sayers explores in this book. “We don’t need another book on the challenges that the church faces in the West,” he writes. “We don’t need another opinion. We need renewal” (p. 11).

We meet every other Thursday, starting on 23 January, following this reading [N.b. revised!] schedule:

  • 23 January | Intro + Ch. 1
  • 6 February | Chs. 2–4
  • 20 February | Chs. 5–7
  • 5 March | Chs. 8–10
  • 19 March | Chs. 11–13

Our venue for all sessions is, as ever, in Room 8 of the Free Church building (15 North Bank Street, The Mound, Edinburgh, EH1 2LS), and we meet from 5:00-6:00 p.m.
