Reading in 2014

As a New Year gets under way, so does the SETS/UCCF reading group. Starting Thursday, 30 January, we’ll be reading Oliver O’Donovan’s Self, World, and Time: Volume 1: Ethics as Theology (Eerdmans, 2013). Professor O’Donovan has kindly agreed to join us for a discussion session of the whole book in the final session.

The dates and sections for discussion are as follows:

  • 30 January: Chapters 1 and 2
  • 13 February: Chapter 3
  • 27 February: Chapter 4 and 5
  • 13 March: Chapter 6
  • 27 March: ‘Meet the Author’

Copies of the book are available at a discount for members of the Reading Group from the Free Church College bookshop.

Our venue for all sessions is, as ever, in Room 8 of the Free Church building (15 North Bank Street, The Mound, Edinburgh, EH1 2LS), and we meet from 5:00-6:00 p.m. Hope to see you there!

Plus: Not the SETS/UCCF reading group

When Collin Garbarino issued an invitation for others to join him in reading through Augustine’s City of God this year, he was greeted with an enthusiastic response. So, he started a Facebook group, and braced himself for the onslaught.

Some comments on his original invitation indicated there was an appetite for a “non-Facebook” option for those who remain (and wish to remain) outside the Facebook ecosystem. SETS has been happy to provide a home for a smaller, quieter, parallel universe for the non-Facebook crowd. Do feel free to visit and join in.
