Edinburgh reading group reconvenes in New Year

The Edinburgh SETS Reading Group reconvenes in January 2017 to tackle Liberating the Gospel: Translating the Message of Jesus in a Globalised World by David Smith.

cover pic Richard Bauckham writes in the preface:

David Smith takes up N. T. Wright’s advice that we should read the New Testament “with first-century eyes and with twenty-first century questions”. So he engages in what he calls “deep listening” to the message of Jesus and the New Testament writers. … Their Gospel was not disconnected from the political, economic, social and cultural dynamics of their world. It spoke into those dynamics, often quite precisely and pointedly. A penetrating Christian critique of economic globalisation … David’s book could not be more relevant.

David will be speaking at the SETS 2017 Spring Conference on “mission in a globalised age”, and this reading of his recent book will be good advance preparation, not only for David’s session, but the conference as a whole.

The Reading Group meets bi-weekly, beginning Thursday 19 January, with meetings and readings as follows:

  • 19 Jan 2017, front-matter & Chapter 1
  • 2 Feb 2017, Chapter 2
  • 16 Feb 2017, Chapter 3
  • 2 Mar 2017, Chapter 4
  • 16 Mar 2017, Chapter 5

Liberating the Gospel (Darton, Longman & Todd, 2016) retails at £12.99, but members of the reading group can get a copy at substantial discount from the Free Church Bookshop for a substantial discount.

Our venue for all sessions is, as ever, in Room 8 of the Free Church building (15 North Bank Street, The Mound, Edinburgh, EH1 2LS), and we meet from 5:00-6:00 p.m.
